Actually we are because Light is. If light doesn't exist, Plants can not generate food, because they are depend on the process of 'Photosynthesis' and it depends on Light. And if plants can not live, all animals will die. It was just point of view for basic need. We could not see anything(if we survived). Everything would be wouldn't.

So, I think you have understood till now that, how important the Light is in our daily life. So let's understand more about it.

   What is Light?

      Light is an Electromagnetic Radiation. We also call it Visible Light. It is a source of energy for Universe too. 

   What is Electromagnetic Radiation(EMR)?

      Electromagnetic Radiations are mainly waves propagating throughout the Space. They carry Electromagnetic Radiant Energy with them. There are seven types of Electromagnetic Radiations. Radio Waves, Microwaves, Infrared, (Visible) Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays, Gamma Rays.

      Out Eye capacity to see is only from 400 nm to 800 nm, hence we can see only Visible Light among all. 

      

   What light is made of..?

      Light is made up of Photons. Photons carries energy in the light and travel in the Space. Photon acts like both, Wave and Particle. By experiments, Scientists can count the Photons. 

  

   What is Speed of Light?

      Speed of Light in vacuum is 299,792,458 m/s or app. 3*10^5 Km/s or 186,282 miles/s.

   What is Speed of Darkness?

      Darkness is nothing but the absence of Light. Where there is a Darkness, Light is absent and where there is a Light, Darkness is absent. It means that, the moment at which Light arrives, Darkness leaves. So, we can consider the Speed Of Darkness same as Speed Of Light.

  

    

Color Of (Visible) Light : 

   Most people has an assumption that the Color Of Light is White Or Yellow. It is just an assumption. Light is made up of Seven colors. You don't believe it? Let's understand it by Experiments done by Scientists in past.

   

  Newton's Prism Experiment 

     

    When Light passes through the Prism, it splashes into different Colors. If we do this Experiment at very first time, we would think that the Prism is creating colors. Back then, everyone was thinking the same.

But Sir Newton was Curious like us. He decided to do an Experiment and Analyze the situation. He took a Prism and while passing light ray through it, he observes seven colors. He thought that, if Prism is creating Colors then Two Prisms would create more colors. He put another Prism in front of it. But things didn't go as thought. Seven rays cannot make more colors. Sir Newton did another Experiment, in this Experiment he arranged two Prisms but one is straight and another kept reverse. The result was a White Light exactly parallel to the Incident one.

These Experiments confirmed that Prism doesn't create any Colors. Prism just disperse Light in its Colorful form. Naturally, Light is made up of Seven colors.   

    Another Experiment of a 7th grade you can try at Home is, take a circular card board paper. Draw Seven Colors on it. This is called 'Newton Disc'.

And now rotate it as fast as possible(You can use appliances like Motor for rotating). At a particular speed, you can see only White Color instead of Seven Colors. 

  

   Why we see Light White?

      We see different colors because an Object absorbs every other color and reflect only one. And our eye perceives only colors reflected and not absorbed by that Object, and we see only these colors.

In the case of Light Ray, it doesn't reflect any color usually. Hence we see it as White Light. And Black Objects absorb every color, hence they are Dark.
